A survey report published by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) reveals that breast augmentation is the most widely performed cosmetic surgery procedure worldwide and that the U.S. leads in the number of procedures performed. ISAPS survey covers surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2013. The survey participants were asked to complete a two-page questionnaire on diverse factors such as the top procedure, category-wise popularity, country-wise popularity and much more. The survey compiled data provided by 1,567 plastic surgeons. Here is some of the interesting figures that came out of the survey which shows the rising popularity of breast augmentation worldwide.
- This procedure tops the cosmetic surgery list with 1,773,584 treatments performed worldwide last year, which is 15.3% of the total surgical procedures performed internationally in 2013
- The U.S. tops in the list for the most number of breast enhancement procedures
- Up to 313,703 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2013, which made up about 17.7% of the total procedures
- Brazil is second in the list with 226,090 treatments, which is about 12.7% of the total treatments and Mexico ranks third with 57,691 procedures (3.3% of the total)
- In the total number of breast procedures performed worldwide which also included lift, reduction and gynecomastia treatment, the U.S. topped the list with 517,012 followed by Brazil with 515,776 and Mexico with 113,631 procedures
- In this category, the lift was next to augmentation with 775,462 procedures, followed by reduction (641,189) and gynecomastia treatment (263,179)
- Other than augmentation of breasts, the US topped in other procedures such as liposuction (235,814- 14.6% of the total), and eyelid surgery (124,684 – 9% of the total).
These statistics show the importance that women across the world attach to this cosmetic breast surgery procedure for enhancing their physical appeal.
